My piece is a data visualization of my social networks on Facebook. It absolutely could have existed before social media, however with the capabilities of social networking, it wouldn't be nearly as vast and would require quite a bit more work to gather the information and sort through it physically. We have always networked and created relationships with people that we come in contact with, even prior to the digital revolution. Social media has made it possible to maintain relationships and acquaintances in a very easy way. It also allows us to network in the digital realm on the basis of interest without having met the people you interact with at all. I feel strongly that the physicality of personal contact is important and getting lost which is why I chose to take my topic and make a physical work of art.
The way I think of broadcasting and social media within my piece is that each person in my network can view my profile information, connecting us in a way that wouldn't be possible without social media.
I really appreciate the time you put into your networking project. The 3D effect made it more interesting. I enjoyed how you made this project tactile and your reasoning for creating it. How how you decided to construct it was great and it was visually pleasing. I felt that you use of color really helped show the different relationships.
ReplyDeleteYour project is very reminiscent of old-school family trees. In the same way, I think that your project serves as a historical record of who you know and what your relationship is to them. It could be really interesting to pull this out and examine it years from now after a (possible and likely) collapse of Facebook and it's social networks (R.I.P. Myspace).
ReplyDeletei loved your project and its presentation of information. their is truly somthign to be said for having a physical and hand crafted product/artwork. im also excited by your ideas of taking it out of the frame and fully in to physical space allowing further representation of the networks.
ReplyDeleteYes this would be a lot more work with out social media. I wonder what you think the easiest and fastest way would be to get the information. After seeing your project though I think it really wouldn't be a easy way of going at it. I mean it was a lot of people and would probably take a lot of time. But i think it is still very possible.
